Summary
The Systems Biotechnology and Integrative Biology laboratories at the Spanish National Center for Biotechnology (CNB) in Madrid are offering a fully funded PhD position under the PIF2025 Fellowship. The successful candidate will join the collaborative project AMBIZIONE (Advanced Microbiome Biotechnology Zips ONE HEALTH), aimed at developing an integrated platform combining experiments and computational modelling for the rational design of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs).
Position Details
Location: Madrid, Spain – CNB (Spanish National Center for Biotechnology)
Funding: Fully funded for 4 years under the PIF2025 Fellowship
Start Date: Fellowship call opens September 2025
Research Focus
The project will integrate advanced statistical analysis, metabolic modelling, ODEs models, complex network analysis, and AI techniques to combine ecological, biochemical, and evolutionary information for SynCom design.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research and develop theoretical and computational models for SynCom design
- Develop your own scientific ideas towards becoming an independent scientist
- Engage actively in laboratory and CNB activities with a positive and proactive attitude
- Complete a consistent research project leading to a PhD degree
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field
- Knowledge of at least one programming language (Python, C, R, Julia)
- Familiarity with development tools (Git, Nextflow, Snakemake)
- Interest in biological systems
- Fluent in English
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
