Digital Humanism Fellowship: Call for Applications 2025-2026

Objective

The Digital Humanism Fellowship aims to invite eminent scholars from various academic fields to the Institute for the purpose of conducting cutting-edge research on all aspects of the digital society. The fellowship program includes both Senior and Junior Visiting Fellowships.
Senior Visiting Fellowships: One senior scholar will be selected each semester to spend one month at the IWM, contributing their expertise and engaging in collaborative discussions with the Junior Visiting Fellows.

Junior Visiting Fellowships: Two Junior Visiting Fellows will be invited each semester to spend three consecutive months at the Institute in Spring 2026. These fellows will focus on research related to digitalization’s intersection with societal, economic, and geopolitical dimensions, alongside other pertinent humanities and social sciences research topics.

Candidates for the Junior Visiting Fellowship are expected to engage in research that is highly relevant to the digitalization of society and its broader implications.

Conditions

  • Stipend:
    • Postdoctoral candidates (those who have defended their PhD by the application deadline) will receive a stipend of EUR 3,300/month.
    • Doctoral candidates (currently pursuing their doctoral degree) will receive a stipend of EUR 2,750/month.

This stipend will cover accommodation, living expenses, travel, health insurance, and incidental costs related to the stay in Vienna. Additionally, the IWM provides the fellows with:

  • Office space with internet access
  • In-house research and administrative facilities
  • Free lunch and other services

Eligibility

  • Senior Visiting Fellowships are by invitation only.
  • Junior Visiting Fellowships: Applicants must be currently pursuing a doctoral degree or have obtained a PhD no more than four years prior to the application deadline.

Application

Applications must be submitted through the IWM’s online application form (email submissions will not be accepted).

Required materials:

  1. Letter of Motivation: A brief letter explaining how the candidate would benefit from the fellowship, their connection to the IWM’s mission and research, and their specific research goals during the fellowship.
  2. Project Summary: A brief summary (max. 550 characters).
  3. Project Proposal: A detailed proposal (max. 7,500 characters including spaces) including:
    • Project objectives
    • Current state of the art
    • Research methods
    • Project timeline
  4. Curriculum Vitae: Including a list of publications.
  5. Two Letters of Recommendation: These must be submitted directly by your referees (a link to a webform will be sent to your referees after you submit your application).

All documents must be in English and combined into a single PDF (as the online form allows only one attachment). Use Latin characters for file names.

Deadline for Applications: 21st September 2025

Selection Process

Finalists will be selected by a jury of experts. Applicants will be notified of the jury’s decision by November 2025. The jury’s decisions are final, and applicants will not receive individual feedback on their submissions.
