Project Overview:

The project aims to create clean, autonomous energy systems tailored to harsh climates. The key objective is to replace diesel generators in Northern Quebec with renewable energy systems like wind and solar, supplemented by advanced battery and hydrogen storage. The project will also explore electric vehicle integration as backup systems and work closely with Indigenous communities to ensure technologies are appropriate and inclusive.

Key Research Activities Include:

  • Evaluating electrolyzer startup and performance in Arctic temperatures
  • Investigating hydrogen storage methods (gas, liquid, solid-state hydrides)
  • Characterizing tanks and regulators under –40°C
  • Assessing hydrogen embrittlement of materials
  • Enhancing water purification via biological oxygen production
  • Testing fuel cells for low-temperature performance
  • Developing membrane durability under freeze–thaw cycles
  • Designing hybrid hydrogen-battery microgrids with wind/solar systems
  • Field deployment and technical policy recommendations

Eligibility:

  • PhD applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree
  • Postdoc applicants must have a PhD in a related field
  • Demonstrated research experience in hydrogen technologies, materials science, or energy systems preferred
